  • Sukhothai, “Dawn of Happiness”, was founded in the 13th century, to be
    the first capital of the unified Thai kingdom, which flourished for two
    centuries as the political, cultural, and religious center of the Thai people.
    The city declined in the 15th century with its architectural gems, Temples
    and buildings decayed and abandoned. The Sukhothai Historical Park was
    established in the late 20th century, including Thailand’s most impressive
    ancient city with nearly 200 temple ruins, royal palaces, and magnificent
    monuments, all set among water gardens and rice fields creating a mystic
    atmosphere of extraordinary beauty and tranquility.


    The old city park is best explored in ½-1 day by bicycles, on rent in the entrance.
    If time allows spend a second day in Si Satchanalai Historical Park,
    50 km north of Sukhothai, home to several monuments of exceptional beauty.
    Visiting the modern town of Sukhothai enjoy Kuay Tiaw Sukhothai, the
    local noodle specialty, the region is famous for.
    To reach Sukhothai take a bus from Chiang Mai (5-6 hours) or
    Bangkok (6-7 hours), or by a  train to Phitsanulok, 120 km southeast from
    “New” Sukhothai, 30 km north of the historical park.
    Sukhothai is best visited in November-February when it’s cool and dry,
    or during the Loi Krathong Festival in November, when the park hosts
    spectacular celebrations with the ruins illuminated by thousands of
    candles and fireworks. Visit both Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai Parks
    as part of 2-3 day trip from Chiang Mai or Bangkok.
