The Major Sukhothai Temples

  • Wat Mahathat
The royal temple complex, the spiritual and architectural centerpiece of ancient Sukhothai, home to more than 200 stupas surrounding the central stupa, an assembly hall with massive stucco covered Buddha statues, and much more. It is one of the largest temple complexes in Southeast Asia.
  • Wat Si Sawai
Distinguished by its three Khmer-style corn-cob prangs rising from a common base and enclosed by a laterite wall within a water moat.
  • Wat Sa Si
Set on an island in a pond west of Wat Mahathat, it is Sukhothai’s most photographed temple. In the temple a Sinhalese-style bell-shaped stupa accompanied by the ruined columns of an assembly hall and a large, seated Buddha statue, all surrounded by water that mirrors the monuments.
  • Wat Traphang Ngoen
The “Temple of the Silver Pond” is set on an island within an artificial pond, featuring a lotus-bud stupa and a large, seated Buddha statue overlooking the water. The temple’s island setting and the reflecting pool which enhances the monuments’ proportions are magnificent.
