Pico Island is part of the Central Islands Group of the Portuguese Azores, together with Sao Jorge Island and the nearby Faial Island 8 km west of Pico Island.

  1. The main landscape feature in the Pico Island is the Pico Mountain, the highest in Portugal and the main reason for the island’s popularity among tourists. Climb the Pico Mountain and hike other beautiful trails
  2. Other interesting attractions in the island are the wine growing culture and landscapes with the protecting Vulcanic stone’s walls.
  3. The impressive 5 km long Gruta das Torres lava tube
  4. The Lajido village, the center of wine growing region.
  5. In the small coastal village of Lajes do Pico you will learn about the island’s whaling industry, and from its harbor you will embark for a whales and Dolphins watching boat Cruise especially in the months of April through September.
  6. Dive in Sao Caetano right off the coast, or in the magnificent underwater marine world between the Pico and Faial Islands.
  7. Take a Road Trip encircling the small island and enjoying unique landscapes, while enjoying the great local wine and food.

Consider visiting the nearby Faial Island for one day using a ferry service to enjoy its capital town and Volcanic landscapes.

Access the island flying from Lisbon or Porto in mainland Portugal or from Sao Miguel airport, or by flying to Horta in Faial Island then with a ferry to Madalena in Pico Island.
The climate in the island is a mild maritime climate with high humidity and 8°C difference between February, the coolest, and August the warmest month.
