• Pico Island Road Trip

A basic visit to the Pico Island will be for 1-2 days of which a one day Road Trip of the small island is highly recommended. Encircling the island along 150 km you will enjoy charming coastal fishing villages, beautiful viewpoints, vineyards, and magnificent landscapes including the majestic Pico Mountain, and other attractions recommended by TheTjoy.com.

  • Starting in Madalena we would recommend heading east on the EN3 Road, considered one of the most beautiful in Portugal, along the Pico Mountain and the beautiful Island’s lakes, Lagoa do Caiado, Lagoa do Capitao, Lagoa do Paul, and others.
  • Continue south to the coastal village of Lajes where you can take a Whales and Dolphins watching boat cruise.
  • From Lajes you can continue on ER1 east encircling the eastern coast and visiting on the way Breathtaking viewpoints such as Miradouro da Ponta Ilha, Ponta Garda, Miradouro Terra Alta, Prainha, and more.
  • Nice beaches on the way include Poca das Mujas Natural Lagoon, the Manhenha Beach, and Baixa Beach.
  • If time allows stop at some of the charming coastal fishing villages on the way including for example, Sao Roque, Santo Antonio, and Arcos Vulcanicos and Cachorro with their lava cliffs and volcanic rock formations.
  • Another option is to return from Lajes heading north on EN2 all the way to the beautiful village of Lajido and the wine growing region.
  • A third option is to start your Road Trip from Madalena heading south along the southern coast and ER1 to the village of Lajes, and to enjoy on the way the Criacao Velha village area, the traditional Moinho do Frade windmill, and the unique vineyards landscapes.

Further southeast visit the nearby Gruta das Torres lava tube and the Moinho do Monte windmill.
