York is a county city with rich cultural heritage, mixture of Medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture, making it a highly popular tourist destination for centuries, 2nd only to London. The city is in North Yorkshire, at the Rivers of Ouse and Foss, 40 km northeast of Leeds and 320 km north of London.

York was founded by the Romans in 71 AD, fell to the Viking Danes and was called Jorvik in the 9th century, and was the commercial center of the north in the Medieval period. The city is known for its Medieval atmosphere and heritage led by the enormous and beautiful, one of a kind, Gothic Cathedral, the Minster, with its superb stained glass windows.
Other Medieval structures are the 13th century, 4 km long, City Walls surrounding the city center, Clifford’s Tower of York’s Castle, and the Shambles area 14th century network of beautifully preserved narrow streets and their medieval architecture.

To absorb the Viking period visit the Jorvik Viking Centre Museum, a great family attraction, and from the Georgian and Victorian period visit the Minster’s Treasurer’s House, the Georgian Fairfax House, the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, and others.

Visit York’s Castle Museum, York’s Art Gallery, the National Railway Museum, and more, and enjoy the many restaurants, cafes, and traditional pubs. Take a York sightseeing River Cruise from the city center, sailing from two departure points where the closest coach access is at St George’s Field.

Spend 1-2 days in York, and a half a day trip to Castle Howard. one of England’s most impressive state homes.
