  • About The German Alpine Road

5-8 Days

A 450 km panoramic road through Germany’s highest mountains in southern Bavaria including the highest of all the Zugspitze. The road runs between Lake Constance and Lindau in the west, east through to Fussen at the end of the Romantic Road, Chiemsee Lake, and south to Berchtesgaden, the Berchtesgaden National Park and Lake Konigssee, close to the Austrian border.

Drive through Alpine Mountain landscapes, green valleys and mountain meadows, forests, crystal clear turquoise lakes, canyons, rivers, and beautiful waterfalls. Visit charming villages, small picaresque towns, castles and abbeys, and relax in the SPA Resorts on the way.

Absorb the local Bavarian traditions and culture, fine cuisine taverns, vibrant Bear Gardens, and lakeside cafes. Enjoy overwhelming postcards landscapes, with stunning winding roads, sometimes exhilarating through mountain passes.
Exploit the endless opportunities for outdoor activities including hiking and cycling trails, mountaineering and climbing, swimming and water sports. And in the winter, the Alpine Road offers some of the best Ski Resorts with infrastructure for different types of winter sports.

TheTjoy.com describes the Alpine Road highlights including;

In Pfaffenwinkel heading east, visit the beautifully decorated Pilgrimage Wieskirche Church, the historic town of Oberammergau, the impressive Benedictine Ettal Abbey and the beautiful Linderhof Palace.
Visit the charming town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and take a cable car to the Zugspitze Mountain summit the highest in Germany and home to three glaciers. Have a leisure stop for a coffee, restaurant, or a picnic in Rottach-Egern on the banks of the vibrant Lake Tegernsee, and continue west to Lake Chiemsee to visit Herrenchiemsee, another King Ludwig’ Castle on the Island of Herreninsel.

At the eastern end of The Alpine Road you will find the town of Berchtesgaden, the Eagle’s Nest, the Salt Mines of Berchtesgaden, and much more, but especially the overwhelming Berchtesgaden National Park and the beautiful Königssee Lake with the numerous amazing trails offering great viewpoints on the valleys and the Alpine Mountain peaks.

To enjoy the German Alpine Road we would recommend a minimum of 5-8 days trip not including extensive outdoor activities, or longer leisure time in one of the lakes or SPA towns. Visiting the southern Bavarian Region will obviously generate a different experience given the season of the year, summer or winter.
The trip in the Alpine Road can be combined with either traveling in the Romantic Route north of Fussen, traveling northwest of Lake Constance to the Black Forest region, or visiting Munich, the capital of Bavaria, and the Austrian city of Salzburg.
