3-4 Days

Reykjavik combines small town charm with heaps of a big city energy, in the southwestern part of Iceland. The city’s streets reflect a colorful array of buildings, from “old” wooden buildings to modern towers. Enjoy fine restaurants and cafes, with lively nightlife and music scene in downtown Laugavegur Street, and in Austurvollur Square.

Thetjoy.com recommends the following attractions including;

  • Enjoy Icelandic Art in the National Gallery of Iceland with its 19th-21st centuries works of art, and the National Museum of Iceland, with its Icelandic art and antiquarian collections.
  • For typical Icelandic museums visit The Whales of Iceland Museum and its impressive 23 life sized Whale’s models, and the Northern Lights Center, Aurora Reykjavik, with its educational displays of this amazing phenomenon.
  • An interesting attraction is the Arbaer Open Air Museum presenting the past lifestyle in Iceland, with more than 20 buildings part of a town square, a village, and a farm.
  • Spend some time visiting the impressive Expressionist architecture of the iconic Hallgrímskirkja Cathedral with its 75 meters high curved spire and side wings.
  • To enjoy a leisure stroll, walk along the town’s Tjorninin Lake, admiring the beautiful buildings surrounding the lake, the gardens, and the numerous bird species that made the lake their home.
  • If your travel plan includes only few days in Reykjavik and its surroundings, consider taking a Whales and Puffins watching cruises, and Helicopter tour over Iceland’s magnificent landscapes of majestic volcanoes, cascading waterfalls, impressive glaciers, and Lava Planes. If you plan to visit Iceland’s eastern and northern coasts you are probably better off watching Whales in Husavik, and Puffins in Dyrholaey near Vik, and in Papey Island.

Spend 1 day in Reykjavik at the beginning or the end of your Icelandic tour, and in addition, take few 1-2 days trips traveling the town surroundings, and further away east to admire Iceland’s greatest attractions.

If time allows and you are interested in a complete Iceland travel, head north to Akureyri, either directly through the Reykjavik Northern Attractions, or taking the complete circular #1 route through the Eastern Iceland attractions.
