Eastern Iceland is defined by us as the regions along the southern and eastern coasts of Iceland all the way north and northwest to Lake Myvatn near Akureyri.
These parts of Iceland offer unique and magnificent nature attractions and outdoor activities opportunities, with very rare human settlements. For better understanding of what these regions has to offer and how to combine them into your Iceland trip plan, this easterly rout starts at Hella east of Reykjavik, then divided to three parts until it reaches Lake Myvatn west of Akureyri.

  • Starting at Hella, head 100 km on the Ring Road #1 to Vik, the island’s southern tip, while enjoying great waterfalls, the Dyrholaey Cliff, Reynisfjara black beach and more.
  • From Vik return to Reykjavik or continue with the second part of the route all the way to the highly popular and magnificent Glacier Lagoon and further to Hofn. In this 270 km northeasterly part of the route you will enjoy some of the most beautiful and popular natural sites in Iceland.
  • In Hofn return to Reykjavik or continue north and northwest all the way to Lake Myvatn and Akureyri for a complete Iceland circular tour. In this 350 km third part of the route from Hofn through Egilsstadir to Lake Myvatn you will enjoy small fishing villages, beautiful fiords and landscapes, and more.

Traveling eastern Iceland will take 3-5 days depending on the number of attractions visited and time spent for outdoor activity.
