  • The shallow lake is a Geothermal Area with numerous small islands, some being pseudo craters, famous for its overwhelming volcanic landscapes and unique geological formations including large craters, lava fields, and hot springs.

    The region is a haven for birdwatchers, with numerous water birds and duck species, making the wetlands their nesting grounds.
    Explore the interesting and impressive lake surroundings including Skutustadagigar pseudo-craters, Dimmuborgir natural stone labyrinth, Hverfjall tephra crater, Namafjall geothermal field, and the Krafla caldera and the huge Viti Crater.

    Once in the area consider also taking a 1 day guided tour, 150 km south, to the Askja Volcano and the other Viti Craters. The lake region offers variety of traveling services including accommodation facilities, great thermal baths, and more.

    Lake Myvatn, 83 km east of Akureyri and 165 km northwest of Egilsstaoir, Is part of the Diamond Circle Travel Route east of Akureyri.
