• Krafla

The 10 km in diameter and 2 km deep Krafla caldera is 15 km northeast of Myvatn Lake.
The western side of Krafla, the Leirhnjukur active volcano, is an active geothermal area rich with colorful steam vents and bubbling mud springs. The magnificent Viti, a few hundred meters west of Krafla, is a huge 300 meters diameter  explosion crater with a green lake within it.
Take the 20 minute trail to the edge of the Krafla caldera rim through the lava fields where the sulfur vents and rocks are still warm from the last eruption.
Visit the Krafla Visitor Centre, open daily in the Krafla Geothermal Station building, to learn about geothermal power ant its potential.
To reach Krafla take road 863 going 14 km north from the Ring Road.
