3-4 Days

Akureyri the capital of northern Iceland, is the 2nd largest town in Iceland with a population of 20,000 people, located on the Eyjafjordur fjord, on the Ring Road, 400 km northeast of Reykjavik, and 100 km south of the Arctic Circle.

The town has an important fishing port, but in the past years tourism has grown rapidly given its magnificent surrounding nature attractions including the eastern Diamond Circle sites, Lake Myvatn volcanic sites, and the majestic Godafoss and Dettifoss Falls.

To spend a relaxed day in town Thetjoy.com recommends;

  • Stroll the old town close to the town’s center to enjoy the old historic houses and buildings going back to the 19th century.
  • Visit the Icelandic Folk Art Museum, and the Jolagardurinn Christmas Garden presenting the Icelandic Christmas traditions.
  • In the Akureyri Botanical Garden, the Lystigardurinn, the world’s northernmost botanical garden, explore the impressive collection of both Icelandic and foreign flora.

Traveling north of Akureyri you will enjoy beautiful fishing villages including Svalbardseyri near Akureyri, and Siglufjordur and Hauganes on the western shores of the Eyjafjordur fjord, among others.

Further west visit the Vatnsnes Peninsula, 200 km west of Akureyri, famous for its Seals colony, and the Hvítserkur magnificent ‘Elephant Rock’ in the sea. On the way to the Vatnenes Peninsula consider visiting Skagafjordur, 80 km southwest of Akureyri, where you will enjoy the folk museum at Glaumbær, presenting the life in historic rural Iceland within an 18th century traditional turf farmhouse.

The islands of Hrisey and Grimsey under the Akureyri Municipality, are both beautiful and tranquil, and are popular sea cruise destinations.

Spend half a day in Akureyri, or make it your home base for 3-4 days travel in northern Iceland.

Take 1-2 Days Trip visiting The Diamond Circle and Lake Myvatn attractions, and additional 1 Day Trip traveling north on the eastern and western coasts of the Eyjafjordur fjord and its beautiful villages and towns.

If you plan to drive back from Akureri to Reykjavik, we would suggest to allocate 1-3 days traveling west and visiting The Vatnsnes Peninsula and the Kolugljufur Canyon, than south visiting The Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the Attractions North of Reykjavik, if you have not yet explored them while visiting Reykjavik.
