  • Rethymno is one of the best-preserved old towns in Crete, the third largest town in the island, on the north coast between Heraklion 81 km to the east, and Chania 66 km to the west. The town was originally built during the Minoan civilization, but the current 16th century old town was almost entirely built by the Republic of Venice, with some additions by the Ottoman Turks. The town is located between the Psilorítis mountain range, with traditional mountain villages and rural landscapes in the east, and the Mediterranean Sea and its beautiful beaches and resorts in the north.

Enter the old town through Porta Guora, the Great Gate arch, the only part remaining from the Venetian wall, and stroll the narrow cobbled streets with the mix architectural designs of the charming pastel colored venetian renaissance houses with the wooden Turks balconies, the churches and mosques.

    • Enjoy the 16th century Venetian loggia, and the beautiful 15th century Rimondi Fountain in Platanou square with the three lions framed by ancient Corinthian columns.
    • Admire the Ottoman 19th century, 27 meters high Neratze Mosque minaret
    • Visit the 16th century Fortezza Castle on Paleokastro hill, the huge fortress built by the Venetian, offering amazing views of the old town and the sea.
    • Visit the small Archaeological Museum and Folk Art Museum
    • Explore the charming Venetian Harbor waterfront, with the small fishing boats tied in the calm and clear water. Stroll to the 17th century Lighthouse at the waterfront far end, and the promenade near the harbor along the small sandy beach, and enjoy the traditional Cretan restaurants and cafes.
    • Visit the small bustling town market and window-shop the boutiques and small shops spread around the old town and the harbor.

Spend at least half day visiting this lovely small town, easily accessible by car from Chania or Heraklion, or by ferry from Piraeus, Athens.
