  • A picturesque small town 110 km northwest of Madrid, known for its impressive and highly preserved 11th century walls, numerous Romanesque and Gothic churches and convents, and Renaissance palaces. In the 16th century Avila became a very popular pilgrimage destination following St Teresa its patron Saint.

    Stroll the narrow, cobbled streets of the old town and the Medieval Barrio Judio, the Jewish Quarter located around the Puerta de San Vicente wall’s gate. Enjoy the hidden small squares, the small shops, cafes, and restaurants. Walk along the 2.5 km, 12 meters high Town Walls, and visit the Avila Cathedral built like a fortress part of the wall.

    Visit the Convento de Santa Teresa de Jesus, a 17th century convent built around the room where Santa Tereza was born, and the interesting Avila History Museum. Outside the old town explore the 12th-14th centuries Gothic and Romanesque Basilica de San Vicente, and the 15th century Real Monasterio de Santo Tomas used by the Catholic kings as a summer palace.

    From the Cuatro Postes viewpoint enjoy the great scenery of Avila, its walls, and its surroundings. To relax, seat in one of the cafes or restaurants under the arcades of Plaza Mayor and watch the people going by.

    Spend at least half a day in this charming town on your way to or from Segovia.
