Koh Phangan Island in the Gulf of Thailand is between Koh Samui, 12 km to the south, and Koh Tao, 50 km to the north, and northeast of Phuket.
The island is home to the famous Full Moon Party scene while simultaneously serving as Southeast Asia’s premier wellness and spiritual retreat destination.
The island consists of mountainous jungle interior with the Khao Ra peak, 635 meters high, and with beaches scattered around the coastline accessible by coastal roads of varying quality.
The southern coast at Haad Rin where the full moon parties are held, and Thong Sala, the island’s main town in the southeast, has the best road access and most development. The north coast at Haad Salad, Haad Yao, and Chaloklum, balances development with tranquility while hosting the wellness community.
The western coast is less developed with rougher roads, and isolated beaches requiring boat access, motorbiking, or dirt tracks.
Thong Sala, Koh Phangan’s main town, serves mainly as a services hub and not as a tourist’s attraction.
Koh Phangan is significantly less developed than Koh Samui or Phuket, appealing to those looking for less polished, more adventurous island experience.
The island’s party scene is famous for its Full Moon Parties held every month on the night of the full moon at the southern Haad Rin Beach which transforms into a massive beach rave attracting 10,000-30,000 participants. Smaller parties held on the island are the Half Moon Festival, Shiva Moon, and other smaller parties offering similar atmosphere with more manageable crowds and less extreme commercial/safety issues.

Wellness communities are concentrated in Koh Phangan’s northwestern beaches, including Haad Salad and Sri Thanu, where yoga retreats, meditation centers, detox programs, and Conscious community events are held. The wellness communities attract practitioners alongside spiritual and wellness tourists.
While in the island visit beautiful waterfalls such as Than Sadet Waterfall and Than Sadet waterfall and enjoy magnificent viewpoints scenery such as in Khao Ra Viewpoint and Secret Mountain viewpoint.
Koh Phangan has some moderate snorkeling sites in the northern tip, in Bottle Beach, and in Haad Salad. For better snorkeling and diving take boat day trips to Koh Tao. Sea kayaking is also available on some of the island’s beaches.
Traveling in the island use Songthaews, shared trucks, the most common Motorbikes, or expensive taxis. Boat taxis are used to travel between some beaches.
Visit Koh Phangan Island for 2-3 days enjoying a beach party, or for more days spending your beach vacation on the island. Take day trips to Koh Samui, for diving in Koh Tao, or to the magnificent Ang Thong Marine Park archipelago.
