• Wat Plai Laem

Wat Plai Laem is a striking contemporary temple complex, located in the northeast coast near the Big Buddha, combining Thai Buddhist and Chinese religious elements in colorful, elaborate architecture. The temple sits beside a small lake with ornate structures reflected in water, creating photogenic compositions from every angle.
The temple’s centerpiece is the massive white statue of the 18-Arm Guanyin, the Chinese Buddhist Goddess of Mercy and Compassion. The statue is 20 meters tall, dominating the complex and visible from the main road. Guanyin worship reflects Samui’s significant Chinese heritage from the tin mining era.
The Laughing Buddha is a large, jolly laughing Buddha statue painted in vibrant colors surrounded by smaller Buddha statues and decorative elements. The Laughing Buddha is technically a Chinese folk deity rather than the historical Buddha but has become incorporated into popular Thai Buddhist practice.
The Temple has Elaborate multi-tiered roofs with colorful tiles, naga serpents, Chinese dragons, ornate columns, and vivid paint creating visual spectacle that feels more theme park than traditional temple. The temple represents contemporary Thai-Chinese religious architecture.
The temple complex surrounds a small artificial lake filled with catfish and tilapia. The lake reflections of the white Guanyin statue are particularly beautiful in late afternoon light.
Visit the temple for 1 hour, preferably at late afternoon.
