• The Derinkuyu underground city

In Nevşehir Province, it’s the largest underground city in Turkey and the most popular to visit in the region, located 35 km south of Goreme. The 5th – 10th century city of the Byzantine era sheltered the population from Muslim-Arab tribes raiding the region, but there is evidence for its use as early as 1900 BC. The multi floors city is ~60 meters deep, and it’s estimated it was the home of 20,000 people, containing large rolling stone doors, low corridors and steps connecting the rooms and floors.
Visiting the city you will find central ventilation shaft, wine and oil presses, stables, cellars, storage rooms, common dining rooms, religious school and study rooms, chapels, and Tombs. Enjoy the nice frescoes and wood carvings scattered in the city. Derinkuyu city was connected with a long tunnels network to other underground settlements.
