• Lakagigar (Laki)

The Lakagigar craters region include 135 crater spread along 25 km, with the largest craters being in the middle. The craters and vast lava fields were formed during the Skaftareldar eruption in the 18th century, and the region is considered to present one of the most stunning landscapes in Iceland.
It’s a 2-3 hours one way 4X4 drive on the rough F206 road, 50 km from the intersection point with the Ring Road, 4 km southwest of the Kirkjubæjarklaustur village. On the way on F206 stop to visit the Fjaorargljufur Canyon and the Fagrifoss Fall. Given the difficult road conditions you might want to consider a guided 1 day trip of the area.
