A charming small hilltop town in the heart of the beautiful d’Orcia Valley between Montalcino and Montepulciano. Pienza was designed in the 15th century by Pope Pius II as an “ideal town of the Renaissance”. While in town admire Piazza Pio II and the surrounding architecture, and the 15th century Cathedral dell’Assunta (the Duomo) with its beautiful paintings and its octagonal bell tower. Visit Palazzo Piccolomini and its lovely hanging gardens which were the filming location of Franco Zeffirelli’s “Romeo and Juliet”. Enjoy the architecture of the Town Hall, and of Palazzo Comunale beautiful facade. In Palazzo Vescovile, visit the Diocesano Museum, with its interesting artworks, manuscripts, tapestries, and miniatures. Downhill from Pienza visit the Romanesque Pieve di Corsignano church, dated to the 7th century and renovated in the 12th century. In the church three naves and altars, and the original baptismal font where both Pope Pius II and Pope Pius III were baptized. Strolling the town streets be sure to enjoy the famous local Pecorino Cheese, and the breathtaking landscapes of Val d’Orcia.
