  • A city in the Franconian region part of northern German state of Bavaria, located on the banks of the Main River, 120 km southeast of Frankfurt, 110 km northwest of Nürnberg, and 280 km northwest of Munich. Surrounded by hills and endless vineyards, the charming university city is considered a wine center with world-class wines and fine cuisine.
    With its roots in the 10th century, the picturesque city presents various historical monuments, magnificent rococo architecture, palaces and beautiful churches. The city icons are the 18th century Würzburger Residenz Palace, one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe, and the towering Medieval Marienberg Fortress, on the western bank of the Main River.
    Stroll the Wurzburg Old Town (Altstadt), from the Wurzburger Residence Palace and Gardens, through the Würzburg Cathedral and its museum, to the historic Market Square (Marktplatz) and the nearby Marienkapelle church. The market square is a vibrant cultural center, home to numerous events and festivals in the Spring through to Autumn, and a charming local market with numerous stalls selling a wide variety of regional food products, and much more especially during Christmas. From the old town cross the river on the Old Main Bridge with its statues lined throughout its length, and climb toward the impressive Marienberg Fortress, museum and small formal garden. While in the fortress consider visiting the nearby Käppele, a small Baroque/Rococo chapel designed by Balthasar Neumann.
    In the evening seat down on the riverside near the Old Main Bridge with a glass of local wine and a dish of the local Mostsuppe (wine soup) and enjoy the great atmosphere.
    Take a tour in one of the local wineries such as Juliusspital, Staatlicher Hofkeller, or Bürgerspital Weinstuben one of the oldest wineries in Germany, enjoying the famous white wines. And if you enjoy outdoor activities, cycling along the Main River, or hiking in the hills and vineyards surrounding Wurzburg is highly recommended.
    Visit Wurzburg for one day (or more), as part of your Romantic Road tour, either as a starting point coming from Frankfurt, or at the end of your trip coming from Munich or Nurnberg.
