A 460 km long highly popular route on both local and tourists, between Würzburg in the north and Fussen in the south, within the Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg regions and near the Austrian border. The road includes picturesque Medieval and Renaissance villages and towns, palaces and castles, beautiful churches, and monasteries.
The Romantic Road wind through one of the most beautiful regions in Germany, with rivers valleys and forests, rural and the Alps mountains landscapes.

TheTjoy.com recommends following the the route visiting beautiful destinations and attractions including;

  • The charming Tauber valley wine country in the north and the tranquil Pfaffenwinkel region with its beautifully decorated small chapels and churches in the south.
  • The road leads through Wurzburg with its impressive Wurzburger Residenz Palace, one of the finest palaces in Europe, and the towering Medieval Marienberg Fortress. F
  • Further south visit the highly popular Medieval Rothenburg with its well preserved picturesque old town, the completely intact surrounding walls, and colored Medieval half-timbered houses.
  • South of Rothenburg you will find the beautiful and charming Medieval towns of Nordlingen, built within a Meteorite Crater, Dinkelsbuehl, and the pastoral Tauber valley villages, palaces and vineyards.
  • Continuing south, visit the impressive and beautifully preserved medieval complex of Harburg Castle and town, the city of Augsburg, and through the beautiful Pfaffenwinkel Region and the stunning Rococo Wieskirche Pilgrimage Church.

  • At the southern end of the Romantic Road visit one of the most popular attractions on the Romantic Road, the king Ludwig II Baroque palace of Neuschwanstein, and the palaces of Hohenschwangau and Linderhof, near Fussen. Fussen is a charming small town with the Alps on the background and numerous outdoor activities opportunities.

While traveling in the Romantic Road enjoy the rich Bavarian culture, the great local cuisine, the Tauber Valley wine and Bavarian Bear, and the numerous festivals held every spring and summer in the area.

Public transportation on the Romantic Road is not ideal but it is possible to visit most attractions without a car. The Europabus operated by Deutsche Touring, the Romantic Road Coach, runs daily from Frankfurt through the Romantic Road towns to Fussen and back.

You can enjoy the Romantic Road either starting in the north, traveling from Frankfurt (for example) to Wurzburg, or starting in Munich, traveling north to Rothenburg and the Tauber Valley, and or south to King Ludwig II palaces near Fussen.

Starting in Wurzburg travel 2-3 days through the Romantic Road, or if time does not allow, take a one day tour from Munich or Frankfurt to Rothenburg and/or the Neuschwanstein palace in the south.

If time allows continue 100 km west from Fussen to Lindau on Lake Constance, or travel east on the beautiful German Alpine Road.
