A charming small Medieval town in Bavaria, Germany, 85 km south of Rothenburg, and 145 km northwest of Munich, built within a 25 km diameter Meteorite crater formed 15 million years ago. The town, part of the highly popular German Romantic Road, has a perfectly preserved 14th century walls encircling it, and a 9th century Medieval old town with beautiful, cobbled alleys, pastel partially timbered houses with turrets, and small shops, cafes and restaurants.
Visit the old town center, the Market Square, with its 14th century Town Hall, the food market, and explore the surrounding Renaissance and Baroque buildings.
Walk along the town’s 3 km wall walk, its towers and gatehouses, and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the old town and the surrounding charming countryside. Visit the 15th century Gothic St. George church, with its impressive Baroque altar and the Gothic wooden sculptures, made by the Dutchman Niclas Gerhaert van Leyden.
Climb the 90 meters high tower, called “Daniel”, Danielturm, offering great landscapes of the surroundings including the crater “ring”. There are few interesting museums in Nördlingen including the Ries Crater museum, Museum Rieskrater, located in a 16th century barn in the old town, home to a collection of meteorites, rocks, fossils, and a moon rock brought back by Apollo 16. In the museum arrange for a guided tour of the National Geopark Ries. Visit the Bavarian Railway Museum at Nördlingen train station presenting an open-air display of more than 100 railway vehicles, the City Wall Museum (Stadtmauer Museum), offering displays related to the history of the town’s fortifications, and other museums.
Visiting Nördlingen for half a day, you will enjoy the architecture and authentic Medieval atmosphere in a tranquil and relaxed environment, especially due to the absence of tourist’ crowds when compared to Rothenburg for example.
Note that the Nördlingen Tourist Office is in the Marktplats, in the Leihhaus, behind the Town Hall (https://www.noerdlingen.de).
