Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
Damnoen Saduak, 100 km southeast of Bangkok, is the most famous floating market in Thailand. The market operates along a network of narrow canals lined with wooden shophouses and vendors selling tropical fruits, vegetables, Thai snacks, pad thai, coconut pancakes, and souvenirs from flat-bottomed wooden boats. The scene is undeniably theatrical and heavily oriented toward tourism, but still spectacular. The narrow canals, the press of colorful boats, the vendors in traditional dress, and the backdrop of canal-side wooden houses create a beautiful visual experience. Arrive very early, to experience the market at its most active before the large tour groups arrive. A short, long-tail boat ride, through the surrounding canal network is a good way to see the market from the water and explore the quieter residential canals beyond the main tourist area.

Mercado flotante de Amphawa
The canal-side town of Amphawa and its weekend floating market, 15 km south of Damnoen Saduak, offer a more local and traditional experience. The market operates along the Amphawa Canal running through the center of the old town, which preserves much of its traditional wooden shophouse architecture and charm. The market's focus is on fresh seafood cooked to order on boats moored beside the canal, including grilled river prawns, steamed shellfish, and fish prepared simply and served with rice on the canal bank. The surrounding town is pleasant to explore on foot, with temples, traditional sweet shops, and the Amphawa Cultural Center offering context on local history and canal-side life. Take a firefly watching boat tour from Amphawa, in the evenings of Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, to experience a magical experience of a long-tail boat glide through the mangrove lined canals in darkness while thousands of fireflies illuminate the riverside trees in synchronized pulses of light.

Maeklong Railway Market
The Maeklong Railway Market, Talad Rom Hub, 7 km south of Amphawa Floating Market, is one of Thailand's most extraordinary and memorable attractions in which a fresh produce market is built on and alongside an active railway line. Eight times daily, a train passes through the middle of the market and each time vendors fold back their sun sheds, pull their produce away from the tracks, and stand aside as the train passes with centimeters to spare. Within seconds of the train's passage, everything is reorganized and business resumes without interruption. The market itself is an excellent fresh produce market with good street food available from surrounding stalls.
