  • The Douro Valley is a rural region specializing in Grapes growing east of Porto all the way to the Portugal-Spain border. The Grapes grown, harvested and pressed in the region are transported to Vila Nova de Gaia part of the Porto Metropolitan, to be stored and matured in the wine sellers (caves).

    The picturesque region famous for its terraced Port wine vineyards, surrounding the mighty Rio Douro as it flows across northern Portugal. Visiting the Douro valley usually as part of your visit to Porto, you will enjoy the overwhelming scenery, the small towns and villages, and the cultural experiences and local traditions.

    Visiting the region part of a boat cruise on the river, riding a scenic train rout, or by car, tour one of the local vineyards, Quintas, learn about the wine production history and processes, and taste the great wines. And obviously admire the magnificent landscapes of the rural region and the flowing river from one of the viewpoints, Miradouros, scattered around.

    The Alto Corgo is the most scenic part of the Douro Valley with its terraced vineyards covering the hills, and the charming towns of Lamego, Peso da Regua, Pinhao and Tua, its valley and lake, overlooking or on the Douro Riverbanks.
    TheTjoy.com believes that the best time to visit to the Douro region is late May and early June through to September to experience the grape’s harvest season. Note that the month of August is a highly crowded with visitors of the region.
