  • A seaport town in the northeastern part of the Peloponnese on the Argolic Gulf, 140 km from Athens in Greece. The beautiful town is a popular weekend retreat and often the exit point for traveling in the Peloponnese. The town was ruled by the Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Empire before it became the capital of the First Hellenic Republic and of the Kingdom of Greece in the 19th century.

    While in town TheTjoy recommends;

    • Visit the old town and its main square Platia Syndagmatos, stroll the picturesque, cobbled alleys and streets, window shop the small shops, and enjoy the beautiful houses, the restaurants, and cafes.
    • Visit the harbor front and walk the Anapliotis Promanade.
    • Explore the Palamidi Fortress and Akronafplia Fortress
    • Take a boat tour to the Bourtzi Fort on the islet in the center of the harbor, and visit the nice Archeological and the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation Museums.
    • In summer, enjoy the beautiful beach resorts surrounding the town and the nice Arvanitia Beach and Karathonas Beache in town.

    Nafplio can be a convenient base for visits of other Peloponnese attractions, including;

    • The relatively close Mycenae, Epidaurus or Mystras
    • Further away west to Olympia (160 km west) or to the Apollo Epicurius, the Peloponnese Parthenon.
    • Or you can take the daily cruises available to the Saronic islands.

    Spend at least 1-2 days visiting the town, and more, spending time in its beautiful beaches.
