William Wordsworth the poet was teaching in the 16th century at Hawkshead Grammar School while Beatrix Potter lived nearby at hilltop farm. Today the village relies on tourism with many small inns, guest houses, teashops, and gift shops. Visit the village square, the 17th century Church of St Michael & All Angels, and the old grammar school.
A 17th century house in the village was home to the Beatrix Potter Gallery, exhibiting a selection of Beatrix Potter’s original drawings and illustrations. One km south of the village walk to Esthwaite Water to enjoy a tranquil picnic on its shores.
