  • Aosta valley was in the Middle Ages a passage to the Alpine passes on the way to the northern and western countries. As such numerous castles, towers and fortified mansions were built in the valley as early as the 11th century. Some of the castles were abandoned and deteriorated into ruins over time, and some beautifully restored into magnificent urban and royal mansions during the 17th-20th centuries. The Sarre Royal Castle and the Fenis Castle near the town of Aosta, and the Verres and Savoy Castles further east are excellent examples of castles worth visiting.
