  • A charming town in Provence, one of the most important cities of the Roman Gaul colony which was founded by Julius Caesar in 46BC. Arles is known for its Roman and Romanesque Monuments, Vincent Van Gogh’ painting period in town, and the Camargue Delta, formed by the Rhone River, the large wetlands area south of the city with its rich and diverse Flora and Fauna.
    Stroll Arles narrow streets and tree shaded squares. Visit Place de la Republique and enjoy the carved sculptures in Saint-Trophime church and Place du Forum where Van Gogh painted the famous Le Cafe Le Soir painting. Explore the magnificent well preserved Roman Amphitheatre, the Thermes de Constantin, the Theatre Antique, and the impressive Roman Obelisk. Visit the Archeological Museum, Musee de l’Arles antique, and follow the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh and the sites he painted.
    During Wednesday and Saturday mornings, enjoy the vast and lively Arles Market with its 450 stalls offering local food produce and products. There are many cultural events and popular festivals held in Arles in Spring and Summer, including the international French photography festival, the Encierro festival where locals run bulls around a square, bullfights in the Roman Arena, Horse races, and more.
    For a great outdoor experience visit the Camargue Regional Natural Park, where you will enjoy birdwatching, the beautiful Pink Flamingo, the Camargue horses and Bulls, the unique Pink Salt Lakes of Aigus-Mortes, and the beautiful landscapes. Consider also sunbathing and swimming in some of the most beautiful beaches in the town of Saintes Maries de-la-Mer and south of Salin du Giraud. Another popular experience is to take a Rhone River boat cruise heading north from Arles to Lyon while exploring within 7 days interesting Provencal destinations on the way.
    Visit Arles preferably in the Spring or Autumn for half a day and consider traveling in the Camargue Regional Natural Park for an additional 1/2 to 2 days. Nimes, 35 km to the northwest, Marseille, 92 km to the southeast, and Aix-en-Provence 77 km to the east, are also great destinations for one or more day tours.
