Between Goreme and Avanos, 2 km east of Cavusin in the Goreme National Park, it was an important Christian complex of rock monasteries and churches, beautifully decorated, with many of the complex buildings hidden in gaps in the cliffs. The area is known for its amazing landscapes of fairy chimneys and other unusual rock formations.
The site is spread over 3 canyons, of which two are connected by a tunnel (closed at 2022/23). At the end of the eastern valley, walking through a natural tunnel in the rocks, you will find a beautiful secluded and tranquil canyon, wildflowers and a water stream. The Byzantine era rock monastery complex was a Christian religious center in the 9th – 13th centuries period, with the first Greek seminars for priests were held nearby.
