Zante Town the capital of Zakynthos is located along a bay on the island’s east coast, home to an architecture strongly influenced by the Venetian who ruled the island during the 15th-18th centuries. Unfortunately, many of the town’s Neoclassical buildings were destroyed during the 1953 earthquake. Stroll the streets and squares of the town and enjoy the small shops and boutiques, the cafes, and the restaurants.
Visit Solomos Square and its surrounding traditional buildings including the Byzantine and Post Byzantine Museum of Zante and its collection of religious icons, frescoes, and sculptures from the 12th-18th centuries period. From Solomos Square continue to the vibrant Strata Marina, the coastal road, with its numerous cafes, bars, and restaurants. Visit Aghios Markos Square, the main gathering area of both tourists and locals, and the 15th century Venetian castle ruins, in the village of Bohali 3 km from the town center, overlooking the town and the harbor.
In the 17th century Roma Mansion explore period furniture, paintings, artifacts, and books, representing the local aristocrat’s life of that period. There are numerous churches in the town of Zakynthos, among them the remarkable 17th century Aghios Nikolaos tou Molou, the 16th century Catholic church of Aghios Markos with its Bell Tower, a copy of the Saint Mark’s Basilica of Venice Tower.
In the town’s main church of Aghios Dionysios you will find the relic of the patron saint of the island.
