• Wat Phra Si Sanphet

The most important and impressive of Ayutthaya’s royal temples, the 15th century Wat Phra Si Sanphet, stood within the grounds of the Royal Palace and served as the spiritual heart of the Ayutthaya kingdom. The temple’s three large Sri Lankan-style stupas, form an iconic image most associated with Ayutthaya, and are the best-preserved structures in the historical park. The central stupa contained a remarkable 16 meters high standing Buddha statue covered in 340 kilograms of gold which was melted down by the Burmese army.
