• Wat Chaiwatthanaram

Wat Chaiwatthanaram is architecturally the most dramatic and complete of Ayutthaya’s temple complexes, standing on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River outside the main island. It’s a magnificent Khmer-influenced structure built by King Prasat Thong in the 17th century to commemorate a military victory over Cambodia. The temple’s central tower rises 35 meters above the river plain, surrounded by four corner towers and a gallery of 120 Buddha statues in various states of preservation.
The temple is particularly spectacular at sunset and evening when the illuminated temple create a breathtaking spectacle. The site is easily reached by bicycle or tuk-tuk from the main island.
