• Walmer Castle

Originally an artillery fort built by Henry VIII in the 16th century, in Walmer, 13 km north of Dover on the coast of the English Channel. In the castle, a Keep and four circular bastions with 39 firing positions. In the 18th century the castle became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, and since then it has become a private residence.

From the 18th century the interior of the castle was converted to provide accommodation for the Lord Wardens, including items relating to William Pitt, and items part of Wellington memorabilia. Surrounding the castle, are parkland and beautiful gardens, forming a mix of formal and informal garden styles.

The grounds include the Queen Mother’s Garden, designed as a 95th birthday gift for Queen Elizabeth in 1997, incorporating classical and Islamic themes, a pool, a viewing mound, and a classical pavilion.
