• The White Temple

Wat Rong Khun, the spectacular White Temple, is the life’s work of contemporary Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. The temple, 13 km south of Chiang Rai city center, is built entirely in dazzling white with embedded mirrors to catch the sunlight, symbolizing the purity of the Buddha’s teachings. The temple’s central ceremonial hall is covered in intricate white stucco work incorporating both traditional Buddhist imagery and contemporary pop culture creating a surreal collision, including superheroes, science fiction characters, and more.
The interior murals continue this fusion of traditional Buddhist cosmology with contemporary imagery including scenes of the Buddha alongside depictions of 9/11, oil fires, nuclear disasters, and other catastrophes, suggesting that the Buddha’s teachings on suffering and enlightenment remain relevant to contemporary global crises.
Beyond the main temple, the complex includes a golden building, a gallery of Chalermchai’s paintings, meditation halls, and additional structures in various stages of completion.
Wat Rong Khun is beautiful, disturbing, playful, profound, and unlike any other religious site in Thailand. Modest dress is required when visiting the temple.
