• Segesta Archeological Park

The ruins of the 5th century BC city are located on the top of Monte Barbaro near the modern commune of Calatafimi-Segesta, 77 km southwest of Palermo. Segesta which was abandoned in the 13th century, was protected by steep slopes on several sides and by walls on the gentler slope towards the Doric temple.
There are two main beautifully preserved archeological sites in the ancient city. A 5th century magnificent Doric Temple on a hill outside the city, with six by fourteen columns on a 21 by 56 meters base, and an amphitheater 63 meters in diameter. The Greek amphitheater is located higher up on the northern slope of Mount Barbaro overlooking the valley towards the Gulf and the coastline.
