• The Hell’s Valley and Ravenna Gorge

A great area to hike and enjoy nature, dense forest, water streams and small waterfalls, in the Southern part of the Black Forest Nature Park. The Hollental valley is located near Breitnau, 23 km southeast of Freiburg, and 44 km southwest of Triberg, between Hinterzarten and Buchenbach, on the A 31 road. The 9 km long and deep narrow valley is surrounded by thickly forested and very steep hillsides, with the Rotbach stream running along the valley.
The 4 km Ravenna gorge and stream opens to the north, under the 60 meters high Ravenna bridge and viaduct of the Hollental Railway. Flowing from the south, the Bistenbach and Alpersbach streams tumble into the valley and become waterfalls including the 16 meters high Great Ravenna Fall, and the 6 meters high Little Ravenna Fall.
At the bottom of the winding Hell’s Valley Road is the Hofgut Sternen historic hotel and the surrounding traditional buildings, among them a glassblowing studio and a cuckoo clock shop, where in both workshops you will observe the local craftsmen working.
A trail leads down the valley to the 12th century St. Oswald’s Chapel. During December the hillside beneath the stone arches of the viaduct is the site of the beautiful Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market.
20 km east of Hell’s Valley relax and have some leisure time in the Badeparadies Wellness Center.
