• The Colosseum

An oval amphitheater and an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome, one of the most popular tourist attraction in the world, east of the Roman Forum. Built in the 1st century using travertine limestone, tuff (volcanic rock), and brick-faced concrete, the Colosseum was an arena for gladiatorial contests, public spectacles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. In the 50,000 to 80,000 spectator’s amphitheater, tiered seating encircled the arena with underground complex of cages and preparation areas. Note that parts of the Colosseum are accessible only by guided tour booked in advance.
