• The Capitoline hill and museums

One of the seven hills of Rome which had on its southern pick the Capitol, the symbolic center of the Roman empire. The hill overlooks the Roman Forum, the center of political, social, legal and commercial life, and the Colosseum, the center of entertainment. Today, when climbing the majestic steps, you will reach Piazza del Campidoglio on top of the hill, designed by Michelangelo Buonarroti in the 16th century. Around the Piazza three palaces, Palazzo Senatorio, home to the Rome municipality, Palazzo dei Conservatori, home to the Pinacoteca Capitolina (Capitoline Art Museum), and Palazzo Nuovo home to the Capitoline Museum and its collection of Hellenic and Roman masterpieces. Both museums were built in the 16th and 17th centuries based on Michelangelo designs. In the Capitoline Museum, beautiful selections of Greek and Roman sculptures, portrait busts of Greek politicians, scientists, and poets. In the Capitoline Art Museum, colorful wall frescos, a great sculpture of Constantine, Bernini’s Medusa, and beautiful paintings by Veronese, Tintoretto, Caravaggio and Van Dyck among others. Outside the museum the famous statue of the She Wolf with the twins Romulus and Remus.
