A Greek island part of the Dodecanese Island chain, 41 km northwest of Rhodes. The island is mountainous with small valleys and a beautiful coastline, secluded coves and small beaches some accessible only by boat. The island’s harbor is in the northern town of Symi, and nearby is the upper town of Ano Symi, Horio, with its beautiful colored houses hanging on the hill above the beautiful harbor. The village of Panormitis at the southern tip of the island, 18 km south of Symi, is home to the famous 15th century Archangel Michael monastery, home to a church and two museums. The island is known for its unique shrimps, “Symi’s shrimps”, which are pan fried and eaten whole with the shell.
The most popular beaches in the island are the NOS beach on the Symi Harbor edge, the Pedi Bay beaches a walking distance from Symi Harbor, the family oriented San Nicholas Beach and the Pedi Beach.
Also recommended are the cliff surrounded Nanou Beach which is great for snorkeling and accessible only by taxi boat, the secluded Agios George Beach, and the shallow water Nikolaos Beach on the northwest also accessible only by taxi boat.
The best way to reach the island is via a ~2 hours daily ferry from Rhodes. One day tour cruise from Rhodes Port of Mandraki to Symi are offered including a visit to the Panormitis Monastery and Saint George’s Bay.
