• Sultan Ahmed Mosque

Known as the Blue Mosque, this overwhelming mosque was founded in the 17th century, home to Sultan Ahmed’s Tomb, a school and a hospice. With five main domes, six minarets, eight secondary domes, and many additional Byzantine elements, it’s a highly popular attraction, located in Sultanahmet square near Hagia Sofia.
The mosque is known for the hand painted blue tiles covering its walls with Tulip, flowers and fruits patterns, and the numerous decorated stained glass windows. The mosque mihrab (indicating the direction to Mecca) is made of carved and sculptured marble, and the minbar (raised platform used by the Imam) is richly decorated.
