• St. Peter’s Basilica

Located in the Vatican City, the spectacular basilica was designed by Michelangelo, Bernini and others in the Renaissance 16th and 17th centuries. The Basilica is considered the largest church in the world and the burial site of Saint Peter, Jesus’s apostles and the “first pop”. The basilica facade stretches across the end of the square and is approached by steps on which stand two 5.5 meters high statues of Saints Peter and Paul. The Basilica center is dominated by a 119 meters high dome, designed by Michelangelo, and considered the largest in the world. The Basilica’s interior is remarkably decorated, with marble, reliefs, architectural sculptures, and gilding, with numerous tombs of popes and sculptures. Admire Michelangelo’s Pieta and Bernini’s 29 meters high freestanding columns supported canopy above the papal altar. Also in the Basilica, the Museo Storico Artistico accessed from the left nave, with an exhibition of sacred relics, and the Vatican Grottoes, beneath the basilica containing tombs and sarcophagi of numerous popes.
