• St. Peter’s Abbey of Salzburg

A 7th century Benedictine monastery in Kapitelplatz, Salzburg, which was continuously rebuilt and renovated throughout the years. The current Romanesque abbey dated to the 17th and 18th centuries has a beautiful churchyard, and “charming” 17th century burial grounds with highly decorated gravestones featured in the famous Sound of Music movie.
Also in the abbey early Christian catacombs, two Chapels carved into the rock, and the 12th century St. Peter’s Church presenting various notable monuments, painted altarpieces, and early Gothic and 18th century frescoes. Within the complex the oldest library in Austria, home to 800 manuscripts and 100,000 book volumes, focusing on Benedictine monasticism, medieval church history, history of art, and items relating to the local history of Salzburg.
The abbey is also home to collections of paintings, church treasures, artworks, period furniture, musical instruments, and more. The Institute for Benedictine Studies and the Austrian Liturgical Institute is also part of the abbey complex.
