• St. Nicholas church in Demre

Initially in the ancient city of Myra, the Roman basilica was built in the 6th century above the burial place of St Nicholas. The church is now a museum (the Santa Claus Museum) located in modern Demre. In the northern section of the monastery complex, and in the small chapels around the nave, vibrant frescoes describing the life and miracles of the saint, and a desecrated sarcophagus which might be the original burial place of Saint Nicholas.
Saint Nicholas, Nikolaos of Myra, today Demre, was the Greek Bishop of Myra and a Christian saint of the 4th century. Saint Nicholas legendary habit of secret gift giving was the inspiration to the Santa Claus tradition, and he is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, children, brewers, and students in various cities and countries all around Europe.
