• Santa Justa elevator

The Elevador de Santa Justa was designed and built in the early 20th century in a Neo Gothic style by Ponsard and was originally powered by steam. The elevator is built of wrought iron structure with Gothic arches, the two passengers’ cabins are made of polished wood, and Brass dials are used to control the elevator. Using the elevator which climbs ~45 meters, enables passengers to avoid climbing one of the steepest hills in central Lison from Baixa to Chiado and Bairro Alto districts.
At the end of the elevator’s journey the passengers will enjoy beautiful panoramic scenery of central Lisbon’s old districts, Rossio Square and the Baixa. In the summer season prepare yourself to the long lines at the elevator’s entrance.
