• Saint Remy de Provence

A small, picturesque town in Provence, 20 km south of Avignon and 25 km north of Arles, presenting the impressive remains of the Roman town of Glanum on its southern border, and the beautiful landscapes of the Alpilles mountains which rises above town. Stroll the shaded avenues and the narrow cobbled streets of the Medieval historic center, to enjoy the small squares with the beautiful fountains and the Renaissance mansions. Saint Remy de Provence is famous for being the birthplace of Nostradamus, and for the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery where Vincent van Gogh was admitted as a patient for a year in 1890, and while there he painted numerous paintings including the famous Starry Night, the Sunflowers, and the Cypress. Surrounded by a circular 14th century wall, admire the two ancient gates of the old town, Porte du Trou in the north and the Portail Saint-Paul in the south leading to the town main square, Place Pelissier, where the town hall is located. Explore the Roman Glanum archaeological site and its Roman monuments including the Triumphal Arch, the Jules Mausoleum, and the ruins area presenting the forum, thermal baths, and various temples. Visit Hôtel de Sade, home to the Glanum archaeological findings collections. In the Provencal Romanesque Saint Paul de Mausole cloister visit the “Van Gogh Cultural and Tourist Center”, enjoy the contemporary art in the Musee Estrine, including the works of the Cubism painter Albert Gleize, and visit the Van Gogh Interpretation Center. Continue to the Renaissance Mistral de Mondragon hotel home to the Alpilles ethnological museum. Relax in one of the numerous cafes and restaurants and absorb the lively vibes of Republique square home to the Wednesday market. There are a few special events in town during the summer including the Creators Market, the Provencal bullfighting and the Ramado parade in mid-August, the Jazz Festival on the 3rd week of September, and others.
