• Ragusa

A small hill town 90 km southwest of Syracuse which was almost completely destroyed in the 1693 earthquake.
The town was rebuilt in two parts between two valleys, Ragusa Superior and the older Ragusa Ibla (Inferior), connected by 4 bridges and a long staircase over a canyon.

In Ragusa Ibla, the more popular by visitors, with its Chaotic, clinging on the hill structure, there are numerous stunning palaces and churches including;

  • Admire the 18th century Cathedral of San Giorgio with its ancient Catalan-Gothic style portal, the 250 steps facade and the massive ornate columns.
  • Examine the Church of Santa Maria delle Scale which combines rebuilt and original parts pre the earthquake.
  • Visit the 19th century Giardino lbleo, The Hyblean Gardens, with their breathtaking views of the town.

In the newer Upper Town admire the 18th century extravagant Sicilian Baroque Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist and its bell tower, and the Hyblean Archaeological Museum in Palazzo Mediterraneo, with its collection of findings from the Prehistoric to the Late Roman periods.
