• Plaka and Monastiraki

The adjacent districts in the center of Athens, at the eastern base of the Acropolis hill, are the core of historic Athens. These districts which are largely pedestrianized are home to historical sites, lively small streets, small shops, hotels, and restaurants.

Monastiraki District
A lively and cosmopolitan neighborhood home to the main Monastiraki Square, narrow alleys with numerous small shops, the Athens Sunday Flea Market in Avissinya Square, and the city’s traditional bazaar, the Yousouroum.
Also in the district, Ermou street, the city’s main shopping and commercial street, surrounded by small streets with thousands of small shops, and Kotzias Square, one of the city’s nightlife centers, with its tavernas, ouzeris, and dance clubs.

Plaka district
A charming and picturesque district, the center of ancient Athens from Filomousson Square to Monastirakiit. Explore the narrow winding streets and the Ottoman and 19th century houses and mansions.
The district is home to some ancient monuments including the Lysikrates Monument, the Roman Agora and its “Tower of the Winds”, and the Hadrian’s Library.  Explore the beautifully restored 16th century Byzantine residence, the Benizelos Mansion, the oldest house in Athens with its arched portico, high-ceilinged rooms, storerooms, olive or grape press, and more. Also in the district, Byzantine churches, Ottoman Mosques, local culture museums, numerous small shops, Tavernas, cafes, and bars.
Within Plaka visit the small Anaflotika neighborhood, a peaceful and serene 19th century Cycladic Island “like” village, with flower framed whitewashed cottages with Blue shatters, an essential element of Athens’ unique architecture blend. To enjoy shopping, stroll and window shop Adrianou Street, the main shopping street in the old town of Plaka.
