• Notre Dame de la Garde

A 19th century Catholic Basilica in Marseille, the city’s highly popular icon built on the foundations of an ancient fort on the south side of the Old Port. The basilica consists of a lower Romanesque church and an upper Roman Byzantine church beautifully decorated with pictorial and geometric multicolored mosaics and marble. Part of the church a 40 meters high bell tower supporting a majestic 11 meters high statue of the Madonna and Child. The basilica which dominates Marseille’s skyline offers overwhelming panoramic scenery of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. To avoid climbing the steep hill, take a city bus or the tourist train to access the Notre-Dame de la Garde.
