A fortified town in Laconia, Peloponnese, built on Mt. Taygetos, 125 km southwest of Nafplio near ancient Sparta. The town served as the capital of the Byzantine state of the Morea in the 13th -15th centuries period, second in importance to Constantinople. The town was destroyed and abandoned until its reconstruction in the 20th century.
Today it is a huge archeological site considered one of the most interesting and beautiful attractions in the Peloponnese, with beautiful buildings and great landscapes. The remains of the fortified ancient city include a castle and numerous decorated churches, monasteries and palaces, and Byzantine streets and houses.
The city is divided to lower and upper towns both have separate entrances. In the upper town visit the 13th century Myzithras Castle, with its beautiful landscapes, the 14th century church of Agia Sofia, the Small Palace and the Despots Palace. In the lower city visit the impressive Pantanassa Monastery still occupied by nuns, the Peribleptos Monastery, and the Metropolitan Church of Hagios Demetrios home to the Archaeological Museum of Mystras.
Visit Peribletos Monastery in the lower town with its frescoes decorated church considered one of the most important collections of artworks of post-Byzantine art. On site are luxurious hotel and SPA facilities, and next to it, Neos Mystras, a modern community 5 km from Sparta. When visiting Mystras consider traveling to the amazing Diros Caves 75 km south of Mystras, the beautiful village of Monemvasia 103 km southeast of Mystras, and the small island of Elafonissos and its beautiful beaches.
