• Monemvasia

A 1st century AD castle village in Laconia region on a small island off the east coast of the Peloponnese, 207 km south of Nafplio. Named the “rock” or “Gibraltar of the east” it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Peloponnese, attracting Romantic couples with its Medieval setting high above the sea.
The 1 km long island is linked to the mainland by a 200 meters bridgeway while entering the island is allowed only by foot. The village of Monemvasia is built behind a hill under the cliffs, hence its unseen until you enter the main gate under the fortified wall. The village’ medieval buildings have been restored with many converted into hotels, and those hanging from steep rocks overlooking the sea have been converted into taverns and bars.
The village is divided into a lower part in which you will enjoy the beautiful central square, the Cathedral, cobbled narrow streets, small shops, restaurants and hotels, and the upper part where you would reach the castle enjoying the views of the sea and the coastline.
When in Monemvasia, consider visiting the beautiful Kastania Cave 50 km south of Monemvasia, and the famous small island of Elafonissos, 40 km southwest of Monemvasia.
