• Matala Beach

A highly popular beach in the small town of Matala on the southeastern coast of Crete, 63 km southwest of Heraklion and 82 km southeast of Rethymno. It is a beautiful long and wide bay beach with small pebbles and soft sand. On the northern part of the beach a rock face perforated with caves interesting to explore, and on the southern side near town a promenade lined with small shops and numerous restaurants.
The calm turquoise waters enable great snorkeling. Umbrellas and beach chairs are offered for rent. While in Matala consider visiting the nearby ruins of the 1600 BC Minoan Palace of Phaestos overlooking the Libyan Sea.
If you are looking for a less crowded beach in the area, continue 24 km northwest of Matala to the Agia Galini Beach, in the lovely village with the same name. It’s a sandy beach offering umbrellas and beach chairs, restaurants, and a small marina.
